Guardian Rumour Mill

Scott Murray

Emmanuel Adebayor wants a loan move to Aston Villa, where he will reunite with manager Tim Sherwood. The pair will then become the subject of a patronising internet pile-on, despite Adebayor having scored for fun under Sherwood at Spurs, because they once celebrated a goal rather sweetly by saluting each other, and because Sherwood has never once pandered to the self-appointed cognoscenti by pretending to be the second coming of Gusztav Sebes.

Villa aren’t stopping there in their pursuit of slightly flaky but highly intriguing box-office talent. They also want existentialism’s Dimitar Berbatov, a free agent in many senses. Suddenly the Paul Lambert era seems light years away.

Tottenham Hotspur, their clothes having thus been stolen, have decided to go down a more solid, dependable, pragmatic route. The once-sassy Spurs will replace Adebayor with Manchester United’s Javier Hernández. They also want United winger Ashley Young and Everton midfielder James McCarthy. Érik Lamela is off to Internazionale, while Roberto Soldado is a target for Villarreal. At this rate, Spurs might start regularly winning stuff. Worlds are colliding, it’s all turning upside down.

Sampdoria want Mario Balotelli but only if Liverpool drop their £7.10 valuation. Subs, please check, but we’re pretty sure that’s all fine.

Ángel Di María is the new Raheem Sterling, in so much as the very mention of his name on these pages triggers ennui in some, narcolepsy in others. He’ll be off to Paris St Germain for the best part of £30m, and not a moment too soon. Though chances are we’ll begin to look back fondly on the saga when the Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale rumours start up in its wake.

Manchester United, in lieu of breaking the world transfer record for either of those two, were hoping to maintain their levels of superstardom with Sergio Ramos. But turns out he’s been stringing them along and will sign a new contract with Real Madrid.

Saint-Étienne winger Max Gradel is on his way to Bournemouth. The deal will give his former club Leeds United a massive “six-figure cash windfall”, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post. The mighty Leeds United reduced to relying on handouts as a result of Bournemouth’s largesse! It’s not 1974 any more, things change and evolve, we accept this as a fact of life. But even so.

That’s the first mention of Leeds in the Rumour Mill since 2001, maybe, perhaps. Chelsea have been nearly as quiet of late, but now it seems they’re after Galatasaray defender Alex Telles. Yes, it’s hard to shake off the suspicion that José’s got something big up his sleeve, isn’t it?

Norwich 0-1 West Ham: Hammers leave it late to grab pre-season win at Carrow Road

West Ham earned victory against Norwich at Carrow Road with a late goal
They had Harry Toffolo to thank as he deflected the ball into his own net
The dangerous Dimitri Payet played the ball in for Toffolo's mishap
Tuesday's game marked 80 years since both sides first met at Carrow Road

By Daniel Prescott

Harry Toffolo's late second-half own-goal was enough to hand West Ham the win against Norwich in a special friendly arranged to mark 80 years of football at Carrow Road.

Both sides went head-to-head in the first match at the stadium in 1935 with Norwich winning that match 4-3.

But it was Slaven Bilic's outfit that came out triumphant this time round as the lively Dimitri Payet saw his late cross deflect of Toffolo and into the net with less than 10 minutes to play.

That one goal proved enough for the win as Norwich wasted several chances on the night with Ricky van Wolfswinkel at fault numerous times.

West Ham almost found the net inside 30 seconds as midfielder Morgan Amalfitano took aim from miles out with John Ruddy in full stretch and beaten.

Fortunately for Ruddy the ball crashed back off the stanchion and behind for a Norwich goal-kick.

Down the other end the majority of Norwich’s chances were falling to the feet of striker Van Wolfswinkel but he struggled to find his aim.

On the stroke of half time the Dutch striker found himself with another chance to grab the hosts lead but he was denied this time by the stretch of West Ham goalkeeper Adrian.

Bilic’s side did their best to make Norwich pay for their poor shot conversion when Kevin Nolan released Matt Jarvis down the wing.

The former Wolves and Gillingham player saw his shot blocked by Ruddy and Jarvis then hit the rebounding ball over the bar.

But West Ham were not to be denied and they got their winner, albeit in fortunate style, with 82 minutes of the game gone as Toffolo put the ball into his own net.

West Ham chief provides double injury update ahead of Hammers’ Europa League clash

Jack Green

West Ham co-owner David Gold has revealed that two Hammers stars will miss Thursday night’s game against Astra Giurgiu.

Both players have been struggling with injuries in the pre-season and will not feature in the first leg of the club’s Europa League Third Qualifying Round tie. Obiang was West Ham’s first major signing of the summer as he moved to Upton Park from Sampdoria early in the transfer window.

The Spanish midfielder made his first appearance for the Hammers in a friendly against Peterborough but has not been match fit since then.

Gold has revealed that the 23-year-old will be back in training next week. Defender Reid will also not be available to face Astra. The New Zealand international is recovering from a minor injury and he will be held out of action until he returns to full fitness.

West Ham eye sensational £12m swoop for Senegal and Fenerbahce striker Moussa Sow

By Tony Banks

Moussa Sow could leave Turkey to join West Ham

The Senegalese forward, who has scored 51 goals in 102 appearances for the Turkish club, has emerged as the frontman new Hammers manager Slaven Bilic wants to strengthen his side for the coming season.

The 29-year-old, who is also being chased by Sunderland, scored 25 goals as Lille won the title in 2011.

Sow still has a year left on his contract at Fenerbahce, but the arrival of Dutch star Robin Van Persie from Manchester United has put his place under threat.

Bilic is still interested in Everton forward Kevin Mirallas, but the £9.5m fee placed on the Belgian is proving a problem, and the Hammers have yet to improve on their opening £7m offer.
